Nominations and Self Nominations to ASN Committees

Posted on

The ASN is looking for new members to serve on several committees starting in 2023. Committee service is a great way to help shape the future of the society and its impact on the community, while working with a great team of colleagues. We are actively seeking self-nominations and nominations from the community because we are deeply committed to diversifying representation on the committees and expanding society leadership. Any member with an interest in serving the society is encouraged to volunteer. Please encourage promising candidates by bringing this announcement to their attention.

Committees in need of new members are:

  • The Nominating committee – Nominates candidates for vacancies on the Executive Council.
  • The Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Conceptual Unification of the Biological Sciences committee – Selects the winner of the award for a senior investigator who has made major contributions in the conceptual unification of the biological sciences.
  • The Early Career Investigator Award committee – Selects winners of the award that recognizes outstanding and promising work by investigators who have received their doctorates in the three years preceding the application deadline, or who are in the final year of graduate school.
  • The Regional Society and Workshop committee – Provides grants of support to regional meetings and/or workshops that broadly support the conceptual goals of the society.
  • ASN Representative to the IDEA Award committee – Selects the winner(s) of the award that recognizes individuals who have strengthened the ecology and evolutionary biology community by promoting inclusiveness and diversity in our fields.
  • ASN Representative to the ASN/SSE/SSB Joint Meeting Committee – Helps with strategic planning for the annual joint meeting of these societies.
  • ASN Representatives to the Scientific Committee for the joint meeting of the ASN/SSE/SSB and ESEB in 2024 – (one early-career and one senior representative) – Will help to choose symposia for this joint meeting.

Self-nominations should include a brief statement (1–5 sentences) of interest in the committee or committees of interest, specifying (for non-award committees) what initiatives of the committee you are most excited to contribute to. Nominations should include a brief statement (1–5 sentences) of why the nominee would be well-suited for the committee(s) to which they are being nominated. Assignments will be made in October, so please submit nominations by October 7, 2023. Self-nominations and nominations should be submitted through the following link: https://forms.gle/MAyyG2D5hwSA1nYx8 (if you do not have access to Google forms, please send the information to Maria Servedio at servedio@email.unc.edu).
