ASN Statement against Racism, Harassment, and Discrimination

Posted on by ASN

Given the harmful nature of recent discussions about SSB's proposed award name change and an article on E.O. Wilson’s legacy, the American Society of Naturalists is reiterating its commitment to creating a society where everyone feels welcome. The ASN strongly condemns all forms of racism, harassment, and discrimination, especially against early career members and colleagues. Early career researchers make numerous and invaluable contributions to our society and community, from conducting cutting-edge research to fostering community in the society and training the next generation of scholars. They are a vital part of the American Society of Naturalists.

In our allied fields of ecology, evolutionary biology, and behavior, there is a well-known legacy of racist scholarship and ongoing institutionalized racism that disproportionately impacts members of color. There was a time when our Society journal, The American Naturalist, published extensively in eugenics and racist analyses of human genetics and differences. Institutionalized racism and societal inequities continue to impact the current makeup of our society and require active change by all members. As we work towards our collective goal of making all members of our society feel welcome, supported, and valued, we encourage everyone to respectfully participate in the dialogue and work towards a more just, inclusive, and equitable future.

Tension, and even conflict, are part of reckoning with the racist and colonial foundations of our disciplines and dismantling existing systemic inequities. But as a professional society and, more importantly, as colleagues, we strive to make our society a place for nuanced, respectful, and open conversations that take into account current power structures and allow new and diverse voices. We ask that people put themselves in other people’s shoes and act with empathy when interacting with each other. We will not tolerate bullying, belittling, or harassing of colleagues under any circumstances.

The ASN is working to improve our society and the fields of ecology, evolutionary biology, and behavior. Creating lasting change requires a lot of time, hard work, and buy-in from the entire community. We welcome the input of any member who would like to help shape the future of our society.
